The island of Nevis is located in the Caribbean Sea next to its sister
island St. Kitts. Nevis covers only 36 square miles and has a central, volcanic
peak which is over 3,000 feet high.
The island was discovered by Colombus in 1493 and settled by Britain in
1628. Nevis became a very important island over the next two hundred years
and was the centre of the British Sugar Trade.

The island was home to Lord Nelson, who married Nevisian Fanny Nisbet whilst
defending the island against the French. Another famous inhabitant was Alexander
Hamilton was born on the island in 1755.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis became independent in 1983.
